چکیده

Understanding how stimulus information is encoded in spike trains is a central problem in computational neuroscience. Decoding methods provide an important tool for addressing this problem, by allowing us to explicitly read out the information contained in spike responses. Here we introduce several decoding methods based on point-process neural encoding models (i.e. “forward” models that predict spike responses to novel stimuli). These models have concave log-likelihood functions, allowing for efficient fitting via maximum likelihood. Moreover, we may use the likelihood of the observed spike trains under the model to perform optimal decoding. We present: (1) a tractable algorithm for computing the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate of the stimulus — the most probable stimulus to have generated the observed singleor multiple-spike train response, given some prior distribution over the stimulus; (2) a Gaussian approximation to the posterior distribution, which allows us to quantify the fidelity with which various stimulus features are encoded; (3) an efficient method for estimating the mutual information between the stimulus and the response; and (4) a framework for the detection of change-point times (e.g. the time at which the stimulus undergoes a change in mean or variance), by marginalizing over the posterior distribution of stimuli. We show several examples illustrating the performance of these estimators with simulated data.

Model-Based Decoding, Information Estimation, and Change-Point Detection Techniques for Multineuron Spike Trains

One of the central problems in systems neuroscience is to understand how neural spike trains convey sensory information. Decoding methods, which provide an explicit means for reading out the information contained in neural spike responses, offer a powerful set of tools for studying the neural coding problem. Here we develop several decoding methods based on point-process neural encoding models,...

Sequential Monte Carlo Point-Process Estimation of Kinematics from Neural Spiking Activity for Brain-Machine Interfaces

Many decoding algorithms for brain machine interfaces' (BMIs) estimate hand movement from binned spike rates, which do not fully exploit the resolution contained in spike timing and may exclude rich neural dynamics from the modeling. More recently, an adaptive filtering method based on a Bayesian approach to reconstruct the neural state from the observed spike times has been proposed. However, ...

Statistical models for neural encoding, decoding, and optimal stimulus design.

There are two basic problems in the statistical analysis of neural data. The "encoding" problem concerns how information is encoded in neural spike trains: can we predict the spike trains of a neuron (or population of neurons), given an arbitrary stimulus or observed motor response? Conversely, the "decoding" problem concerns how much information is in a spike train, in particular, how well can...

Information Theoretical Analysis of Instantaneous Motor Cortical Neuron Encoding for Brain-Machine Interfaces

Sequential estimation algorithms based on spike trains for motor Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI) require knowledge of both neuronal representation encoding of movement and movement decoding from spike train activity. In these BMIs, an instantaneous encoding estimation is necessary which is unlike the methods commonly used that are based on time windows of neural and kinematic data. An online, in...

Computing loss of efficiency in optimal Bayesian decoders given noisy or incomplete spike trains.

We investigate Bayesian methods for optimal decoding of noisy or incompletely-observed spike trains. Information about neural identity or temporal resolution may be lost during spike detection and sorting, or spike times measured near the soma may be corrupted with noise due to stochastic membrane channel effects in the axon. We focus on neural encoding models in which the (discrete) neural sta...
